Welcome to the Human Club!
This is a free book club for authentic, vulnerable, busy humans. We'll connect every 3-4 months to discuss a quality read that will reflect and inform how we co-create our community.
These gatherings are an invitation to connect with each other, learn and grow. These are come-as-you-are, no-shame style discussions. You're welcome to come listen, contribute, ask questions, offer different points of view; it's all welcome.
What is important is the intentionally shared time together, whether you've read the book or not. You're welcome here.
Our discussions will allow us time to go deeper, connect the content with what's going on for us as individuals and as a community; both locally and globally.
Please reach out if you would like to bring a Human Club gathering to your community (school, neighborhood, staff meeting, professional group).
Co-creating events like these with other community members is part of what makes them so supportive.

The Neurodiversity podcast is SUCH a wonderful resource! This interview with Mona Delahook is amazing. She lays the foundation for the WHY behind this book and her work. She discusses Top-Down, Body-Up behaviors, Interoception and Alexithymia. She touches on co-regulation and complexity of language and it's limitations. These are some important concepts for changing the paradigm from (well intended, but harmful) behavioralism. "You can value your child's differences, and be curious."
"Beyond Behaviors: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children's Behavioral Challenges." This book, published in 2019, has been a valuable tool to professionals and parents alike. Content includes co-regulation; the secret sauce for relationships and connections. This is a wonderful interview!
Thank you for sharing in our first Human Club book:
Finding the Magic in Middle School by Chris Balme. November 2023.
Thanks to those who enriched our discussions regarding creating thriving Advisory programs for students, parents and teachers. Insights included aligning practice and perspectives with current science relating to brain, body and behavior, and adolescent developmental tasks.
Topics included: collaborating proactively; slowing down and embracing experiences, disagreements and mistakes as vital in learning to be Human; identifying dysregulation in ourselves and in others; remaining curious and responsive (vs reactive); the role of co-regulation, and providing a safe, non-shaming relationship.
We enjoyed deepening our collective understanding, taking on new perspectives and creating stronger relationships. Thank You!
If you have questions, comments, or would like at any time, to connect about these concepts or share ideas about how to better align with adolescents, don't hesitate to email for local support.
Chris Balme has wonderful resources on his website. Growing Wiser is his beautifully written, thoughtful and compassionate newsletter. Dive in and check out his inspiring, world-changing work!
